I received an email about the Hawaii Wildlife Center yesterday and it was the first I had heard about it. Currently my plate is full and I don't have time to write a proper article about it but from the gist of what I could gather the place is currently under construction up at the north end of the island just past Hawi.

Their main focus seems to be rescuing injured Hawaiian birds and rehabbing them back to health.

This is from their website: The Hawai?i Wildlife Center is dedicated to the conservation and recovery of Hawai?i?s native wildlife through hands?on treatment, research, training, science education and cultural programs.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Hawai?i Wildlife Center will consist of three integrated facilities: a wildlife care and response unit, an education pavilion, and an interpretive courtyard, operating 7 days per week year-round.

Check their site for more information at: www.hawaiiwildlifecenter.org

What is the Hawaii Wildlife Center?
by: Anonymous

The Hawai?i Wildlife Center (HWC) is currently under construction in Kapa?au, North Kohala (directions are available on our web site). The completion and opening is tentatively scheduled for this coming summer. Once fully operational, the HWC will provide state-of-the-art rehabilitation of threatened native wildlife populations (seabirds, shorebirds, waterbirds, bird of prey, forest birds and Hawaiian bats), through hands-on care, treatment, research, training, science education and cultural programs.

The goal is to complete construction of the 4,500 square foot facility and then equip and staff it to treat Hawai?i?s native wildlife. It will be the first fully equipped facility designed for care of native birds in the State. The HWC will consist of three integrated facilities: a wildlife care and emergency response unit, an education pavilion, and an interpretive courtyard, operating seven days per week, year-around. It will provide for the best achievable medical/husbandry care for sick and injured wildlife, including the only emergency first-response resource during natural & man-made disasters that may occur throughout the Hawaiian archipelago. Successfully treated animals will be returned to the wild. The animals under treatment will provide critically important information about these rare species, and benefit the overall wildlife populations as a resource for conservation management and public education. Our wildlife service area extends > 1,000 nautical miles from Hawai?i to Kure Atoll in the newly established Papahānaumokuākea National Monument.

The HWC will also benefit the community by creating a place for jobs and volunteerism in conservation education, and in cultural, mentoring and training programs. HWC will be a critical emergency response facility for training agency response personnel and volunteers, and for the rehabilitation of contaminated wildlife. It will also provide educational resources for the entire island for both private and public groups and for visitors to the island. Education programs will be designed to teach conservation of Hawai?i?s natural resources and the preservation of Hawaiian cultural connections to the environment. In so doing, HWC programs will help to prepare students for careers in conservation. Wildlife will play leading roles in bringing these programs to life. HWC will be open daily for residents and tourists.
