Waipi'o

Would like some advice on Waipi'o Valley. We do have a 4WD vehicle, but are somewhat worried about the road up/down to the valley floor. Is it really that bad or "just be careful"? Is there a need for a tourguide and, if so, recommendations? We also worried about Mauna Kea summit, but it turned out pretty easy.
