Vog...should I be worried?

by Cara
(US)

Hi there!
I just found this lovely web page and forum and figured I would see if I could get some advice.
I am scheduled to visit Kona for the first time (I've tried Maui a few times and am so excited to see the Big Island) at the end of May until June but I have been reading so much about vog that I am beginning to wonder if I should cancel. So I have a few questions if you don't mind to those of you there.
First, for someone who has never experienced vog before I am wondering how bad it is in Kona and if it there is a constant smell. Are most people are avoiding the outdoors..are most people affected? etc.
I am curious if recently you find the visibility is very bad in Kona. Are you able to see blue skies on sunny days or is it too hazy? If so, how consistently has it been? I am just trying to see if almost every day is hazy and voggy or if it is sort of sporadic.
We have been looking so forward to bright sunny days at the beach after such a long and hard winter. We definitely don't want to switch our plans but if there is a lot of vog perhaps we should.
Thanks to all of you for reading this and any help is very appreciated!!!
Have a great day!
Cara

headache then sinus infection
by: et

Hi,
I live on Kauai. Soooooo far from the Big I. but I definately get a headache every time our mountains can only be seen thru a haze of vog...often it turns into a sinus infection. Does anyone else suffer this?

**************************************************
Yea lots of people here on the big island suffer headaches and repository issues. I personally get a sinus headache when the vog is bad. I can taste the sulfur as I type this... yuk. But the funny thing is, people from the big city go "what vog?" because they are so used to crappy air quality. J.T.

To protect your health and your family:

CANE BURNING SCHEDULE: You can call the cane burning hot line for the burn schedule on Maui at (808) 877-6963. H & C usually doesn't burn from Dec - Feb.
I check daily because I live here.

I call the hot line before I go to bed, set the alarm for the start of the two hour burn (which can be anywhere between 4 am- 9 am) get up at that time and close the windows, and turn on air purifiers. If its too hot, I turn on the air conditioner or fans with the outer doors and windows closed during that time.

See the Vog

To see air quality in Kailua Kona in real time, go to the web cam on *****.com

*************************
Why go to their webcam when ours is 1000 times better? And our cam shows from Redhill in the south to around Kaiwi Point to the north in real time, not 60 seconds ago one picture at a time.

sending wife away
by: Anonymous

LETS NOT BS ABOUT THIS VOG ANYMORE. IT IS VERY BAD HERE IN KONA. I WAS ON OAHU YESTERDAY AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. IT WAS THE FIRST SUNNY DAY I HAD SEEN IN MONTHS. MY LUNGS HURT, I HAVE HEADACHES, AND I I EXHAUSTED ALL THE TIME. I HAVE TO WORK OUTSIDE IN THIS STUFF. IT HAS AFFECTED MY WIFE BAD ENOUGH THAT I AM SENDING HER OUT OF HERE TILL THIS MESS SETTLES DOWN.

Hi Again!

I want to thank you for your very helpful information! It is great to get such honest answers and I appreciate it more than you know!

We have decided to postpone our trip in hopes we can reschedule it soon. I am just too worried to take the risk of the vog putting a damper on our vacation.

This website offers such great information thank you for creating it! I will be checking back often for updates so we know when a good time to visit is. I really can't wait to see Kona!

Thanks again so very much!

Conditions in Volcano Village?
by: Anonymous

Hi - just found this site - Mahalo! We will be coming to visit our 22 year old who up and moved to Kona about 8 months ago, so will be there at the end of May no matter what...but I am really concerned with a portion of our trip that we have planned for Volcano Village. Does anyone know what the vog situation is like there? With the park closures and bad conditions we are considering staying away, but will loose a min of $250.00 deposit on our lodging. I know that no one really knows what things will look like in a month but I am trying to figure out whether to risk it...

Thanks for any info

Hi Katie's mom,

As I write this it's actually sunny, so who knows. I can actually see blue sky for the first time in days. I wish I could give you some good advice on this but I can't. Sorry. Joe

I experienced vog in March
by: Anonymous

I was on the Big Island from 3/25 to 4/1 , and was unaware of the vog until a local mentioned to me that there had been an eruption at Kilauea the day before we arrived . The usually breathtaking sunsets were definietly affected , unfortunately . I understand that the vog has gotten a heck of a lot worse since we left . You might be interested in reading this article , and checking in for updated news on the situation .

Who knows
by: Joe

Aloha Cara, welcome!

OK, here goes. Visibility has been crap for weeks. Air quality worse than mainland China. I know, I've been there.

You can't smell it. Yet. I can't, my wife says she does sometimes.

This episode with the VOG is unprecedented so nobody has a clue as to how long this is going to last.

It's not as easy as saying just go to Maui, sometimes the air is worse over there because of the wind currents. Same with Oahu.

I'm sure there's pockets of blue sky, like up at the north end of the island like Hawi. I was up there about a month ago and it was beautiful even though is was crappy down here in Kona.

The board of Tourism probably won't be electing me president anytime soon. LOL. But that's the true truth as I see it.

Click the webcam link on the left menu. You can see what it looks like for yourself.

Joe.
