Moving pets to Hawaii just got easier

by Joe
(Kona )

The hardest part of moving here seems to be getting your pets through the process.

Seems it just got a little easier according to West Hawaii Today the local newspaper, they said "qualified pets may now fly direct to neighbor islands."

Used to be you had to ship fido to Honolulu for quarantine first before he could could join you on the big island.

Sharing Jet
by: Pete

Aloha! Yes, Rick we want to go this fall, so next spring won't work. Once we get everything set, I will share the information so you can know what we experienced. Brenna, will all of your cats have their own carriers or will some share? In addition, are you ok with them on the floor of the jet, or do you want them on a seat? I ask both questions because they could affect the size of the jet that would be needed, which, of course, affects the price. The estimates that we have received range from $32,000-50,000 from Van Nuys airport. We are going through the procedures for direct release on Maui, but I know the jet can also go to Hilo. When would you like to go? We'd like to go around the 3rd or 4th week of November, which means we need to book the jet soon so we can get the Hawaii Dept of Ag our information 30 days in advance for the direct lease. We do have some flexibility, though. If you want to email me at pbohling66@gmail.com, we can figure out if sharing is an option for us.

private jet
by: Rick

Since my dog is too big for a carry-on, I was going to look into this possibility. I am also interested in the cost. I could probably do up to $10,000 for me and my dog.

I think going from LA would be most cost effective.

I would not be moving until next spring, so our time lines probably don't meet but it would be good to share info.
Thanks

I am interested in a private jet for animals!
by: Brenna

I would be interested in sharing a private jet. I will be moving within the next six months with six possibly seven cats to the big island near Hilo. I'm going through the procedure for the 5-days-or-less quarantine. Please let me know what it may cost so I can judge whether or not I'm able to afford it. I was considering it myself for the same reasons you mentioned.

share a jet to hawaii?
by: Pete

Is anybody interested in sharing a private jet to Hawaii? We do not want to put our cats in cargo, and they are too big for the carrier that fits under the seat. We are going to Maui, but the jet can also go to another island. We can go anytime after November 13, 2011 and are flexible with dates and mainland departure city. I will check back to see if anyone is interested.

Pets in cabin
by: Kelly

Hi,
Kelly here, again, with some exciting news for those individuals wishing to travel with your pet "In-cabin". Alaska Airlines just announced they will now allow pets, not just service animals, to fly "In-cabin" to Hawaii. Check out their website for more information.
Hopefully, the other airlines will follow in their footsteps.
Anything I can do or questions to answer, please let me know.
Aloha, Kelly

airline to fly your pets
by: Anonymous

I am too an animal lover and refuse to put my two babies in the cargo. I found pacific air cargo flies animals and the whole plane is only cargo. They fly out of Lax only to honolulu and its about 700 or so if I put my big dog and my tiny dog in one big crate. I think its worth it.

Flying Pets In-Cabin to Hawaii
by: Kelly

This is definitely a perplexing and stressful situation for most pet owners, as we would all like to have our pet(s) sitting safe and secure with us, in flight. I include myself, and my beautiful French Bulldog, in this scenario as well.
Unfortunately, there are restrictions having our pets fly with us, in cabin, to Hawaii. In order to have your pet in-cabin, the pet would need to be classified as a "service animal" or a "emotional support" animal.
Most airline websites have this information outlined in detailed. If you still have questions, I am happy to help, just email me directly at kelly@centralmauianimalclinic.com

Dogs in cabin area
by: Rick

I am having the same dilemma trying to find an airline that will allow dogs to fly in a cabin area. I know there is a pet airline, but the pet owner cannot fly on the same flight so I am not too keen on my dog flying alone.

I have looked into sharing a private charter jet, but too expensive.

Anyone have a suggestion. My dog is about 35 pounds and certainly could not fit in a crate under my seat.

Thanks

Help with Extra Large Dogs!
by: Windride

We are moving to Kona next month and are having a terrible time finding out how to fly our extra large Golden Retrievers to Hawaii! All of the airlines are telling us that they are too big to fit through the doors.

The dogs weigh 112 and 93 lbs. They have to fly in an X-large and a Giant crate.

Any help would be SOOOO appreciated!

Mahalo!

Happy to help.......
by: Kelly

The cost to bring your pets into Hawaii really starts on the mainland with the preparation. The costs can vary with each practice. But you will be required to have the following: microchip inserted, two rabies vaccinations and a blood titer test, health certificate. Then you have to start the paperwork with the State, seems overwhelming at first, but there are people who can help. The cost for a permit ranges (per pet) between $145.00 to $165.00 depending if your pet(s) are flying into Honolulu or a neighbor island.
If you are flying into a neighbor island, there will be an additional cost to have a direct release agent meet and release your pets at the designated airport. On Maui, for example, the fees range between $350.00 to $450.00 depending on time of day and/or day of the week. Happy to answer any questions, Aloha, kelly@centralmauianimalclinic.com

Akona Pets....You ROCK!
by: Bill and Amy Peterson

Our dog child, Sparky just completed his second return trip back to the mainland. Thanks to Akona Pet Relocation Services, it has gotten to be relatively easy getting him to and from Colorado every six months. Ruth and Mitch basically do everything but physically take your pet to the shipping spot. The first time we brought Sparky over, I was a wreck but it was really all for nothing. Trust me and use their services if you want to bring your pet to Hawaii.

Concerned pet owners
by: Chelsea

Hi, so far this information is very helpful! My fiance and I are getting married in less than a month (June 4th!!!), and plan to move to hawaii within the next year! We live in Ohio now and have always dreamed of living there. We plan to save as much money as we possibly can after the wedding so that hopefully by January of 2010, when our apartment lease ends, we can make the big move. The only thing that concerns us is our two dogs. We've got an austrailian Shepard mix and a golden retriever. I've looked into the quarantine information before but it seems very overwhelming with all the steps. So really any information would be helpful, thank you so much!

We are planning to move to Maui in the fall and would like information on how to have our two dogs direct released at the airport in Maui.

The Hawaii gov't website states direct release is only available at Honolulu airport.

Thanks for your help

Many Mahalos from Monstah!
by: Lynsey

Monstah (4 yr old cat) and I found Akona Pet while we were trying to get him from North Carolina to my new home in Maui. Ruth was incredibly helpful and made it such a stress free process! Monstah got to Maui safely and couldn't be happier in his new home thanks to Akona Pet.

Hats off to Akona Pet Relocation Service
by: Bill and Amy Peterson

We wanted to bring our Cairn Terrier, Sparky Maxwell to the big island, however, after reviewing all of the quarantine guidelines, we decided it would be too difficult. That was until we found Akona pet! Wow, Ruth and Mitch are true professionals as well as fun people to deal with. They provided us with the paperwork, the deadline information and a very clever passport kit.

Ruth made Sparky's reservation and on November 17th, Sparky flew from Denver to Honolulu. He was released from the quarantine office as they had all of the information needed for direct release. Her handler in Honolulu then put Sparky on a plane for Hilo and I picked him up at the Aloha Cargo office. He was in fine shape and he is now loving being an island dog!

I am a worrier and I was nervous about him flying so far BUT I spoke with Ruth often and she assured me it would be fine. She was right. Do not hesitate to contact them if you have a pet you want to relocate to any of the islands!

I love this information
by: Lee Kohn

We are planning to move to Kona next year (if we can sell our house in Michigan). We have a border collie (48 lb.s) and a small indoor cat. We are so relieved that we can fly straight to Kona and have a Vet release them from the airport.
