Konaweb and Konaforum - Friends or Foes?

by Joe Trent
(Kailua Kona )

Some website owners squelch or delete the mere mention of another websites name that they view as a competing website about their topic.

Personally, I don't see it that way. I see it the same way as Santa Claus in the movie "Miracle on 34th St."

I use this philosophy in my day to day operation of my auto repair shop here in Kona. I refer customers to other shops when I know they're better suited for my customers needs.

The other shops reciprocate and we work in the spirit of harmony and cooperation instead of dog eat dog competitors. I just got off the phone with Firestone, they're sending me a customer with a problem that they know I'm better suited to handle.

Everybody wins in this scenario.

So... check out Konaweb  and Konaforum  for more information about our local area. Both of those sites have active forums where you can post your questions. (Notice we don't have an easy to use forum like they do)That's one reason I'm telling you about them.

Konaweb is the 800 pound Gorilla of Kona websites having been the first to build a site about Kona. They have a very active forum with a lot of long time members who share tips about moving to the big island.

If you know of some great feature, fact or article on their websites and would like to mention them here, be my guest.

In the spirit of cooperation. I personally invite their webmasters to come here and freely post anything they want about their website.

Sincerely,
Joe Trent

Thanks Kona Dave
by: Joe Trent

I appreciate your stopping by and taking me up on my offer to post here.

That's the great thing about the internet, if you don't like someones forum, you can go build your own.

I'd like to have a forum but I just don't have the time to moderate it. I looked at yours, I'm sure you spend a lot of time keeping things running smoothly over there at Konaforum.com and have done a nice job on the site. I appreciate all the work you've put into it because I know how long it takes. Most people don't have a clue.

In this particular case I don't feel the need to reinvent the wheel, which is why I linked to your site above.

Even though my link says "forum" its not what anyone used to bulletin board style forums expects. But anybody can post anything here related to Hawaii they want so I call it a forum.

About the only time I remove posts is when it's spam. But I don't get too much of that. Knock on wood.

I'm sure there are other instances where I'd remove a post that I can't think of right now. But for the most part I don't have that many posts and the ones I do are from tourists asking questions or telling about an experience they've had here. Mostly happy stuff. I like happy stuff... now I'm starting to remember why I don't have a real forum. Keep up the good work Dave... J.T.

I used to be on Kona Web too
by: Todd M

I also used to be on Kona Web. I was booted because I had posted something in a thread that got out of hand. There was nothing I had said that was remotely antagonistic, but KonaBob decided it was best to remove the thread and all of the posters regardless of what part they played in it. I used to enjoy Kona Web but now think their webmaster is just trying to get a dime anywhere he can. He said he would reinstate me for $15. I figured if my comments were of no value to him I'd just leave and let his members lose my vast knowledge of the Kona and the Big Island. I suppose if he appologized and Gave me $15 I would consider coming back, well, maybe not.

Censorship for Profit
by: Peter

Don't feel bad John, I once recommended a business on Konaweb but my post disappeared. I thought I forgot to click on "post" so I re-posted my recommendation only to find it deleted. I sent an e-mail to Konaputz asking why, he e-mailed me back and said my recommendation was deleted because it was a competing business with another business that advertised on Konaweb! I e-mailed him back and told him he was a hypocrat, so he booted me.
My wife was booted from Konaweb after posting a reply about a recommended business that advertised there, exposing them as unregistered and unlicensed.
Not a loss, that forum has lots of daily postings but most are repeated posts by mostly the same people. I also believe there are some compensated posters there that keep recommending the same businesses.

Freedom
by: John S. Rabi

While I am not the owner of either of those web sites mentioned, I played a crucial role in the establishment/success of both web sites. Konaweb would never be what it is today without my ideas and contributions in the beginning in the mid '90s. Unfortunately, the owner of Konaweb and I had a major disagreement and I was very publicly booted from its forum. Many forum members voiced their disagreement and they got booted too!

The owner of Konaforum set up the site to accommodate those people who got booted from Konaweb. While I certainly agree with the owner of Konaforum, everybody has the right to run his own web site any way he wants too, the censorship methods used by the owner of Konaweb reminds me of the methods of communists and dictators. After all, the Konaweb forum is set up in a way that you can't even post my name or the name of my company name there! Not that I would want either of those posted there, but it certainly defeats the purpose of the forum that was originally my idea and was set up to provide information.

Owner of the Kona Forum
by: Kona Dave

Aloha,

It is interesting that I just found this link. Thank you for allowing this forum for everyone to read.

Without writing a long story the Kona Forum was started due to some censorship and deleting of users that took place on the Konaweb. Now I am not saying it was right or wrong as the owner of the Konaweb is entitled to do what he wishes with his website. But in the spirit of the Internet and free speech I started the Kona Forum. I cannot speak for the other website except to say that they do censor quite a bit. Also, the owner of the other website seems to not like me and those who register and post in my forum as he sends everyone he kicks off of his site to mine. I have never met the owner of Konaweb and I have never said nor posted anything bad about him.

The Kona Forum has grown a lot in the last few years and I invite everyone who has questions and/or opinions to join and post. I do very little (if any) censoring except a few cuss words and personal attacks. I have also created an adult area (special access only) where there is no censoring but still no personal attacks allowed. I created this so young people will only see wholesome interesting posts.

I will be updating and improving the Kona Forum over the next year or so. So look for a new fresh look.

Mahalo,
Kona Dave
