Kona's Annual Roots Bodyboarding Contest

Today was the 4th annual "Kona Roots Bodyboarding Contest" held down at Wai'aha Beach Park which is also known by most people as Honl's.

Kona Roots Body Board Contest

I didn't know anything about this contest till today. Actually my plan was to work on another project, not go to the beach and take alot of pictures. But I kept hearing the loud speaker making announcements from my lanai and being the nosy type that I am I got in the van and drove down to see what was going on and to my surprise I found this little old boogie board contest going on...

So I thought cool, I'll take some quick photos, go home and write a small blog post and then get on with my other project and I proceeded to do exactly that. Now sometimes when I'm at an event I'll take a picture of a sign with a lot of text on it and when I get home I'll read the text on the picture. In this case that's exactly what I did today. This is the sign I'm taking about

Malama Wai'aha

Right then after reading the sign I knew I couldn't do just a little post about this and move on. No, there was some serious history going on here. Past and maybe present... Ever hear of how Iron man started? It was a small event just like this one! Anyways, I get in the truck and back to the beach I go.

I walked over to the tent to see if I could get some back ground information about the event and the history behind it. There I met Christa and Kelly and they totally clued me in on the event. They said it was started 4 years ago by a group of local body boarders who have been body boarding here since they were kids.

They also said the Kona Roots Body Boarding Contest is the only local competition put on by local people, totally home grown. The other competitions are run by companies from the mainland.

Then they dropped a bomb on me, this beach is where Tom Morey used the first boogie board he ever made. Ever heard of Morey Boogie Boards? Yup, this beach right here. Cool. 1971. I could tell they did a great job putting on this event just by looking around while talking story with them. They had lots of food and beverages for everyone, shoots, they even asked me if I'd like some Ono (fish). Wish I hadn't just ate before I went down there.

They told me that local businesses donated all the prizes. Which were 8 body boards. This picture shows a list of local sponsors of the event.

It was a beautiful day at Wai'aha Beach Park and I learned allot about the birthplace of boogie boarding today. Cool.

Father and Son

Kona Roots Body Boarding Contest had the aloha spirit to da max today. Like father like son.
