Is Vog a problem for people with asthma?

by Sharon
(Athens Georgia)

I'm contemplating a move to Kona. In my effort to thoroughly research the area I came across a lot of information about the Vog. Since I do have asthma, I'm just wondering how bad it is. How do people with asthma deal with it? I know it depends on the trade winds but is the Vog bad most of the time (say 20 out of 30 days?)or only occasionally? It would be a crucial factor in my decision. Thanks for any help you can give.

Volcanic emissions and dirt.

Thanks for the note Dave. Sorry about that. I've read so much about the area I feel like I already live there.
C'mon, Joe, surely those coffee trees grow in some kind of dirt. hahaha! That's ok, a few good planters will do the trick...as long as I can get my hands on a pineapple and banana every day, and poke around in some orchid pots I'll be happy.

What is vog
by: Dave

You do not define VOG. It is not usefull to use acronyms people do not understand. The correct usage would be " I came across a lot of information about the volcanic emission, fog combination (VOG).

Then you are free to mention vog and everyone knows what you are talking about.

Good point Dave.
But... 160,000 people live on this island that do know what VOG means and sometimes I forget that folks in other parts of the world may not understand.

Mahalo for pointing this out.

Thanks
by: Sharon

Thanks so much folks. I'm in Athens Ga. now and in the summer the 95 - 105 degree, spirit crushing humidity may be worse than a bit of Vog. And the summers seem to last forever sometimes. But a few days a month, I can handle that. Sounds like optimal work days to me. I just love the outdoors though. I'm happiest when I'm elbow deep in dirt. Thanks again. Sharon.

If you want to play in the dirt you'll have to move to the Hilo side. They have dirt. In Kona it's all volcanic rock. No dirt. Joe

vog / asthma
by: Anonymous

# The American Lung Association of Hawaii has these tips if you're sensitive to vog, especially if you have a chronic breathing problem like asthma, bronchitis or emphysema: Stay indoors and use air conditioning, if possible.
# Drink plenty of warm fluids.
# Have medications close at hand.
# Avoid strenuous outdoor activity.

I'd don't have asthma but...
by: Joe

The VOG can be pretty bad sometimes. Maybe a handful of days per month.

It gives me a head ache when its bad and once in a while my lungs kind of ache from it. I've heard of folks who had lung problems that just couldn't live here because of it.

I've often wondered if living at the north end of the island would be VOG free. Maybe someone from up that way will share their experience.
