Honokohau National Park - Day 2 of BI Video Tour

Saturday was beautiful blue skies, no vog, a great day for shooting Day 2 of the Big Island 5 Day Video Tour.
Now mind you I have had 3 destinations listed for Day 2 since I came up with this idea. Ever had a case of your eyes are bigger than your stomach?
What I mean by that is I'm starting realize my 5 Day itinerary might be a tad bit ambitious. For example, it's been a while since I've been to Honokohau National Park and I forgot what a great beach it has. Coming and looking around and then leaving is OK, but you really could make a nice day of it all by it's self.
Bring a lawn chair, snack and a book or newspaper and you can just hang for the day and enjoy the whole uncrowdedness of it all. There are plenty of places you can enter the water to cool off during the day if you choose.
Things To Do At Honokohau National Park
- See Dolphins & Turtles(I show you where in video)
- Go for a long walk on the beach
- Relax all day
- Take a cool dip
If you get there early in the morning around 8 AM you can hike out to the south western part of the park on the rock jetty at the mouth of Honokohau Harbor and watch sleeping Dolphins swim back and forth out in front of the harbor entrance.
Or walk along the beach and keep a sharp eye out in the tide pool areas for green sea turtles. Chances are good you'll see one or more.
How To Get There
There are 3 ways to get to Honokohau National Park but I only recommend one. The way I go is 3 miles north of town on Highway 19, look for the sign on your left "Honokohau Harbor".
After you turn on the road heading to the harbor go about a 1/4 mile and then turn right on the first road you see and follow it as it curves around past the boat launches and then park. Walk west towards the ocean and you can't help but walk right to the entrance of the National Park. It will be to the right at the mouth of the harbor. Enjoy.
Conclusion
I didn't spend the whole day at the park, I left and drove up to Pololu Valley to video and to act as if I was following the 5 Day Itinerary. What I realized is Honokohau National Park should be a single day all by its self. Yes, I did go to the park and then up to Pololu Valley in one day but I really would have missed out if I was on vacation and had done it that way. I shot video from the top of Pololu, but now that I think about it, I have to readjust the 5 Day video intinerary to what is most practical and most enjoyable to the average visitor. So each week as I shoot video and evaluate the time line you will see adjustments to the 5 Day Video schedule. All for the best I hope.
