Hawaiian Art is Cool...
Hawaiian Art is as varied as there are days in the month. There are many artists that make Kona their home. One of them is my friend Steve Thomas. Steve works with a lot of different types of metals. Brass and copper are some of his favorites. If you have visited Kona recently, you've probably seen the new "welcome to Kona" sign on Palani Rd. just makai of Queen "K" hiway. Steve built this sign for the local chamber of commerce.
This photo below is a "Bird of Paradise" a very popular flower here in Hawaii. Steve built it completely out of copper. Then he airbrushed it.
The base is ohia wood with river rock in the top.
Steve's already had a couple of people offer to buy the bird of paradise, but he won't sell it. Say's he's giving it to his brother.
Steve makes all kinds of beautiful things out of various metals. Here are a couple of towel bars he made out of copper. Notice how they look like bamboo.
As you can see they're fully functional. Steve fabricates all his Hawaiian art in a small shop located in the old industrial park on Alapa St.
Steve recently retired from fixing forklifts over the last 30 plus years and is now focusing on creating his Hawaiian art works. Another friend of mine, Gunner Mench has his own gallery that show cases a variety of other types of art check it out.
