The 1st Hawaii Air Show Invitational took place May 28th and 29th 2011 here in Kailua Kona. Organized by one very determined woman named Teri Thomas.
After 7 years of wading through red tape, Teri and a group of volunteers and local sponsors made it happen. And happen it did! There were bat wing sky divers, stunt planes, a World War 2 era T6 trainer, a couple of F15's and lots of static aircraft displays that you could go inside.
Lots of ono food, drinks and entertainment for the kids big and small, it was truly a great value for the whole family.
The very first airplane ever operated commercially in Hawaii back in 1929 was also on display. It was recently returned to Hawaii after being located on the mainland and fully restored in honor of Hawaiian Airlines 80th year operating in the islands.
The flying displayed at the show was totally first class, from Alan Miller landing his Aeronca Champion on the back of a Chevy truck, to the U.S Air Force F15 streaking by at 500+ knots.
A big Mahalo to all of the folks who came from all over the place to put on this show. Talk about an effort, for example, the F15's had to be refueled 7 times between here and Japan.
Nothing seems to last long term in Kona, I hope the air show does, it was truly a first class event that those who took part in and volunteered for should be proud off. From the size of the crowd, I'd say they'll be back, there was a pretty big turn out. I know I'm going again next year.
