April 2008, my husband I moved our family near Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. The move was expensive, but that wasn't new news. The island was paradise, but what else would a family living mainland have expected. We loved the island and it was worth every penny. What we didn't know was that the volcano Kilauea broke open a vent depositing high amounts of sulfur dioxide into the air. This became an extreme high health concern for my one year old son who began having difficulties breathing. After two months of watching my son swell threefold, we moved back to Utah. I would have loved to stay on the island or to have moved to a different island but it was the best decision for us to move back to Utah for the time being. I have nothing but love for the island; but I would just like to see more information being shared about the vog. It seems as if a lot of people are interested in the cost of moving to Hawaii but nothing can be more expensive than the cost of not knowing.
Thanks for you post Amber. A lot of people moved off the island last year because of the vog.
I would have been one of them if our house had sold. It was killing me too.
The good news is I was just down at the volcano last week and the flow into the ocean has stopped for the time being and Halemaumau vent was a lot less than the year before.
Thankfully the vog now is nothing like it was a year ago.
Our webcam is probably the most reliable way to find out what the vog is like here on a daily basis.
