After leaving the Waikoloa Hilton we thought we'll have dinner at the Big Island Steak House at the King's Shops there at the Waikoloa Resort. We walk in and notice the kitchen immediately on the right of where the hostess's podium is located. You can see the plates of delicious looking steaks and ribs waiting to be served to guests.
The baked potatoes are HUGE and looking totally delicious with all the trimmings. This is where the problem starts...
Which I'll get to in a minute.
So we have a seat over at the bar while waiting for our reservation time, we were about 10 minutes early. I'm sipping my Coke and I notice Eila is intently watching a female food server over prepping baked potatoes. Now I got to tell you, me and Eila are both a couple of germaphobes and we pay particularly close attention to how a food server handles our cups or glasses when they bring it to the table, if they're holding my cup by the brim, YUK, I ask for a straw and I don't really like to drink with a straw but it's better than putting my lips where they just had their fingers.
Anyways back to watching Eila watch the food server, I asked what are you looking at and Eila says she's been watching this server prep a couple of baked potatoes. Yeh so? Problem is she just finished bussing a table full of dirty dishes and now she's over here putting her hands on someone's food. Eila said she counted from the time the server went into the kitchen with the dirty dishes to the time she came out it was 6 seconds. How good do you think she could have washed her hands in that amount of time?
Now let me define "prepping"...the food server used her hands ON the potato to "squish" it open, then used one hand as a "backboard" to bounce the condiments onto the spud, THEN with BOTH hands patted all the ingredients into place. Did I mention that Eila saw this server wipe her face and hair a couple times just before "fixing" the potato? And the ultimate server sin she committed was her wearing low rise pants and pushing the tag on the back into the "nether" regions.
Needless to say we didn't order baked potatoes with our dinner. Instead we spent the whole time watching food servers bussing tables, handling money, using the order screen at the bar and never washing their hands in between. I am so not ever eating there again!
We ordered steaks and rice. Neither handled by hand. I will say I noticed one of the chefs wearing gloves and the other chef had on one glove. Why only one is beyond me.
The steak at the Big Island Steak House was excellent, if the servers could learn how to use tongs to prep the food instead of by hand I might consider eating there again. But I won't hold my breath.
