THIS FESTIVAL WILL BENEFIT NA KEIKI HE'E NALU O KONA

The above was submitted to Konafriends by Keli.
I wasn't familar with NA KEIKI HE'E NALU O KONA and asked her what it meant and she wrote back:

"Na Keiki He'e Nalu o Kona is a nonprofit group of surfers who focus on keeping the beach clean and preserving Hawaiian culture with and emphasis on involving keiki. Their main "beach" is Kohanaiki and Jim Sogi and Eddie Huihui are the guys in charge. It's really good for the kids. They put on surf contests, beach clean ups and educate the kids on Hawaiian culture through surfing."

Now listen to Hawaiian Music Free

Listen to Hawaiian Music
Listen to Hawaiian Music

You can just click the player like Itunes on their site and listen to streaming Hawaiian music while you're checking out the latest here at Konafriends.

Just minimize the other site while the music is playing. I'm listening to it in the background while I'm writing this post and it's nice.

I have the Itunes player installed on my computer and it works great with streaming music.

The Whales Are Back!

This afternoon I glanced out toward the ocean and noticed a flock of boats about a quarter of a mile off shore. That usually means something's up. So I grab my binoculars to see what was going on and sure enough it was a whale.

This is the earliest I remember spotting a whale in a long time. I grabbed my camcorder and shot some film. Unfortunately it's not really good enough to upload, or else I'd post it right here.

The good news is this year I'm going to definitely get some good video of whales and show it right here. Plus I should be receiving the coolest Sony web cam on the planet any day.

Yup, this baby will pan, zoom, tilt, you name it'll do it. This webcam is state of the art, it's very possible you will be able to see whales live right here, that's how good the zoom is going to be on this camera. I can't wait!

Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm

SeahorseThe first and only seahorse farm in the U.S. is located here in Kona at the Natural Energy Lab. The Ocean Rider seahorse farm was started in 1998 but did not give tours until this year.

Last Friday I decided to play hooky in the afternoon and go take the tour. It was very informative. Craig and Carol Schmarr run Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm, Craig took me and about 20 other people through their property and he explained all about the seahorses.

Did you know?

  • The seahorse is the only animal in the entire animal kingdom in which the male has a true pregnancy, and he stays pregnant most of his life.

  • Wild seahorses live about 2 years.

  • Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm seahorses live about 8 plus years. Because of being raised in captivity their much more healthy.

  • Seahorses are an endangered species.

  • Seahorses can grow to 13 inches long

In the photo to the right, people are letting seahorses clamp on to their fingers. Craig said the seahorses like the warmth of humans.

Ocean Rider Seahorse farm breeds over 15 species and have the largest stock of seahorses on the planet. I'd have my own seahorse after getting all wound up from tour, but they won't sell them in the state of Hawaii because of the potential of ecological damage if they were to accidentally get introduced here.

The tour is Monday through Friday at 2PM. You can call them at 808 329-6840 to reserve.
