A picture is worth a thousand words, but a movie is priceless! Today I video taped from Kona to Kohala. I will be editing the tape all weekend and posting bits and pieces as I get it done.
I'm working on a video showing the highlights of the Kona side of the island. I can testify that it's a lot harder than it looks. I came home today after 5 hours out looking for tiger sharks to video, and all Eila could do was laugh hysterically at my first great film debut. Anyways, below is something that came out ok.
A video about the road widening in Kona from the harbor to town.

Labor Day 2006 Kona Style
This Labor Day in Kona was the Queen Liliokalani canoe races. With over 200 teams entered, it's the largest canoe race in the world.
The race starts at the Kailua pier and on day one go to Honaunau and back. That's about 20 miles each way.
On day two, the puker race, because everybody got drunk the night before celebrating. OK, that's probably not true now, but 15 years ago it was. So says Eila. She was a paddler back then.
Anyways back to the facts, the day two canoe race starts at the Kailua pier and goes to Keauhou and back. About 5 miles each way.
Below is a compilation of video I shot while hanging out at the pier today. The footage of the honu (turtle) was taken as he came cruising by the seawall that I was standing on.
And the Harleys also came cruising by. The pier area was one of the happening places to be. The second hot spot (literally) was at the Hawaiian Slackkey Guitar Festival down at the Keauhou Sheraton Resort.

Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii
Everything I've written to date here on Konafriends has been about the Kona side of the island. Today I'm going to tell you about the best kept secret in the state of Hawaii, and it's on the other side of the big island.
OK, So What's the Big Secret?
The 28 million dollar Imoloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii. Located in Hilo. A few months ago, West Hawaii Today ran a story about the soon to be completed Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii and let me tell you, it sounded fabulous.
That was back around February. Since then I haven't heard one thing about the place. Not even on the coconut wireless. So last Friday I had to go to Hilo for business which is on the opposite side of the island about 90 some odd miles away.
Then I Rember...
The New Hawaiian Astronomy Center and I thought I'd stop in and check it out. It's now completed and open to the public. WOW is the first thing that comes to mind.
It has a planetarium, interactive exhibits and a very cool 3-D movie about the "Big Bang."
Its mission is to bridge the gap between astronomy on Mauna Kea and Hawaiian culture by teaching the public about both.
Very soon I will be going back to Hilo with my camera and I will do a thorough story about the Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii. Then I will add the story to the "Fun Things to Do" section of Konafriends.
In the mean time here's a map and you can check out their website for more information.

Water Spout off Kona
Today around 3PM a water spout was seen here off the coast. Tim from Airservice Hawaii had stopped by the shop and we were talking story and all of the sudden Tim spotted the waterspout off shore.
So I grabbed the camera and Eila got the camcorder and this is what it looked like.

Kona Traffic Jam
The Pride of Hawaii, The Island Princess and the Navy destroyer were all here today. One or two ships is the norm, but three is very unusual.
