January 21, 2006 6:17 pm - Celebrity Summit Cruise Ship Visits Kona Today.

I woke up and looked out the window and saw this huge cruise ship staring me in the eye. I didn't think I'd be this far along setting up my blob or blog or else I would have taken a photo of the ship for you. Next time. Here's a link showing the Summits itinerary. Sounds like fun. Cruise ship in Kona Saturday So we eye balled each other all day long. I went to go get my camera and take a photo for everyone to see and wouldn't ya know the ship was leaving and too far away to take a photo of. Next time. I promise. I've been reading how to set up this blog since 10 am this morning and it's now about 6:30 pm. Not bad. Earlier I thought I might have bit off more than I could chew trying to set up this blog. We'll see. I haven't tried to upload it. If you're reading this now, "Yippee" it worked. Today was actually kind of cool all day long. I know, those of you that live in real cold places are thinking I don't have a clue as to what "cool" actually is. LOL. Your right, I'm a wimp. That's why I live in Kona. Life's to short to live in a freezer, even if it is cheaper. One of the things I thought about before I moved here almost 10 years ago was, If I couldn't make a living here than at least I wouldn't freeze to death living on the beach. Time to go read some more of the "how to" book on blogging. Aloha for now. Joe

January 22, 2006 10:10 am - Big Leaguers Come To Kona

Yesterday Benny Agbayani and Onan Masaoka, both big time major league baseball players were out at the old "A" playing field giving local kids pointers on the game. From what I heard they'll be there again today. It's nice to see guys like that coming back to the island and spending time with the kids. What an impression that makes I'm sure. That's one of the things about Kona I love. Everybody is so down to earth. Lots of famous folks live in Kona but you wouldn't know by the way they act. I love this place! A couple of weeks ago I saw the Mayor and a friend of mine driving by the house, I waved, and they waved back. You want to meet the governor? Go to one of her town hall meetings when she's here in town. I'm sure you could no problem. Try that on that mainland. LOL. I love this place! Last summer Eila and I went to Honolulu for a long weekend. We were down in Waikiki at the Movie on the Beach and Eila ran into Mufi Hanneman (mayor of Honolulu) while in line at the concession stand. She told him how much we liked their Movie on the Beach and that we came from Kona just to participate in the event. She said he was humble and said "Don't thank me, thank these guys over here" and then proceeded to take her over and introduce her to the folks who actually set up the event and run it. Nice guy. Stay tuned to see what tommorrow brings, Aloha for now.

January 23, 2006 6:34 pm - Whales, Snow, and The Waterman Academy Boat in Kona

Aloha, It snowed on the Big Island Sunday! That's right snow in Hawaii!
The two highest mountains here are Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea and it snowed on Mauna Kea Sunday. So much so that the road to the summit was suppossed to be closed today. I saw 5 Whales today from our lanai. Eila saw 3 at the same time when I was in the garage downstairs working. The whales I saw were one at a time. This is our first year in our new home and our first whale season in this house, so we didn't know for sure what to expect view wise.

View from our lanai Above is a view from our lanai. I took the photo this evening about 6:10. The boat in the picture is the "Rapture". I got out my binoculars to read the name on the stern. I also saw that Watermanacademy.com was painted on the side.
So I logged in to see what the deal was with them and was surprised. It's quite the ship. It even has a hyperbaric chamber onboard. In case you don't know what that is, it's for treating decompression sickness, or the "bends" from surfacing too soon or quickly when scuba diving. Very cool. We don't even have one in Kona! If you get the bends here you have to go to Honolulu for treatment. Aloha for now, Joe
